Recipes for the Lactating Mother

The following foods are highly recommended for the mother from the day she delivers her little one. These foods help her to accommodate the physical changes in her body. They are traditionally given in Nellai and can vary from individuals and regions.

Day 1
  • Immediately after childbirth, a small portion of kasturi wrapped up in a beetal leaf is given. This will help her from falling ill (fever).
  • Heat ¼ cup of honey in a pan and allow it to boil. Once it starts  raising up, switch off the flame. Allow it to cool . It can be given 1-2 hours post delivery. This helps her to eliminate the unwanted blood from her body.
Day 2
  • Mix tumeric powder (preferred: kasturi mangal) with a pinch of asafoetida, mix it with water to make 3 small balls. These balls should be consumed on an empty stomach. In the earlier days, fresh tumeric used to be ground at home.
Day 3
  • In a pan, dry fry 1 tbs of mustard seeds, keep it aside. In the same pan, dry fry a small piece of asafoetida, keep it aside.Grind the fried mustard seeds and asafoetida along with palm jaggery without water. It will become sticky. Make 3 balls.These balls can be be consumed on an empty stomach. This helps in free blood flow.
Day 4
  • In a pan, dry fry 1 tsp of pepper. Powder the fried pepper. Make a syrup with 1-2 tbs of palm jaggery. Filter the syrup. To the filtered syrup, add the pepper powder, stir well. Add little cow's ghee so that the legiyam doesnt stick to the pan. Consume this legiyam on an empty stomach.

  • Boil 10-12 pcs of garlic in milk, mash them well. Add palm jaggery, stir continously till it becomes a paste. Add little cow's ghee so that it does not stick to the pan. Eat this on an empty stomach. This helps in milk secretion.
  • This can be repeated as often as needed.
Day 9
  • Take 1 tsp of jeera. Powder the jeera. Make a syrup with 1-2 tbs of palm jaggery. Filter the syrup. To the filtered syrup, add the jeera powder, stir well. Add little cow's ghee so that the legiyam does not stick to the pan. Consume this legiyam on an empty stomach.
Day 10
Continue the Ginger extract juice (Inji Charu) at least for a month. If any health issues like constipation occurs, discontinue the consumption.

After consuming all the above mentioned foods a paan has be taken.
