There are some Nellai traditions which are followed during the pregnancy. There are some practices done during the 5th month and Valaikappu is done at 7th month of pregnancy. After the Valaikappu the pregnant girl is taken to her maternal abode .The following posts will contain the details of the rituals.

  • Once the pregnancy is confirmed, to ward off the evil eye ( dristi )  a white cloth is used. After the warding off, the cloth can be thrown away. Normally, karpooram (Camphor) is used to ward off the evil eye, but this should not be used during pregnancy.
  • The expectant mother is not allowed to go out after 6 pm. If it is absolutely necessary to step out, neem leaves (1-2 leaves) maybe kept in her hair instead of flowers.
  • While performing archana in temples, cocunut should not be broken. Instead of cocunut fruits can be offered for archana,
  • The happy mother to be should not visit the temples after the 8th month of her pregnancy.

The traditions of 5th month and 7th month are given in the following posts.
